Northville finishes a close second; Milford third

MILFORD - Normally, the boys and girls have separate competitions in track and field. But the annual Balawajder Classic Co-Ed Classic affords an opportunity for boys and girls to work in unison.

Teams took advantage of the occasion to work on some details as well as be competitive on a sunny Saturday at Milford High, and Lakeland’s Eagles were the best, scoring 97 points to finish ahead of Northville (95.5), Milford (69), Waterford Mott (61), Bay City Western (56) and Walled Lake Northern (53).

The co-ed relays concept has been around for years as an early meet and fun opportunity for teams.

“We are a combined program,” Farmington coach Chip Bridges said, “and we like this meet because it’s a chance for us to bond and work together. It’s sort of a way to kick off our outdoor invitational season.”

Boys and girls results are combined in field events, and on relays, two girls and two boys must comprise each relay unit.

Lakeland won the shuttle hurdle relay, 4 x 100 relay and the discus relay, as well as the shot put/discus 4 x 200 relay as girls head coach John Kababik and boys coach Sean Williams delighted in the results.

Justine Burt, Michael Chluazzkki, Reina Troxell and Zack Confer combined for the victory in the discus relay (429-2) among Lakeland’s victories.

Northville won the grueling 4 x 3200 relay with Conor Naughton, Ana Barrott, Ben Cracraft and Lexa Barrott clocking 41:38.5, and added a title in the distance medley relay with Emma Herrmann, Thomas Smither, Cayla Eckenroth and Naughton as the winning unit. Milford’s quartet of Josh Deardoorian, Sarah Ausum, James Thomason and Mallory Barrett took first place in the 4 x 800 relay in 8:45.96. Barrett also ran on the winning 4 x 400 relay (3:43.47) with Victoria Heiligenthal, Isaac Phillips and Deardoorian joining her.

Barrett was also on the winning high jump relay with AJ Costanzo, Sierra Charlick and Mitchell Appleton, and Walled Lake Northern’s quartet of Sam Solak, Brianna Mulrooney, Mike Mulrooney and Joey Albright won the pole vault relay with a combined height of 41-6.

Farmington won the sprint medley relay with Morgan Merlino, Joe Steven, Akili Echols and Caleb Roy comprising the winning unit that clocked 2:41.80.

The meet is named for Gene Balawajder, the late cross country and track and field coach, and athletic director at Milford who was active in cultivating and continuing the legacy of those sports in the school district. Balawajder passed away in 2006.
