There were plenty of positives to come out of Novi's 87-49 KLAA Central Division girls track victory Tuesday over visiting South Lyon.

The Wildcats, led by sophomore Emma Hammelhuff, were able to build a 31-13 lead in the field events and went on to post the season-opening victory.

Hammelhuff swept the shot put (30 feet, 0.5 inches) and the Discus (70-9), while also taking a third in the pole vault (7-6).

Other individual winners for Novi included Hannah Hood-Blaxill, high jump (4-4); Kate Prisby, long jump (14-0.5); Deanna Martynenko, 100-meter hurdles (16.86); Karenna Roest, 300 hurdles (48.38); Hadley Peterson, 800 (2:48.03); Hannah Lonergan, 1,600 (5:27.2); and Jessica Lypka, 3,200 (13:01.88).

Northville romps

Gracie Goble and Lauren Rodriguez each captured two events Tuesday as the Mustangs rolled to a 94-43 KLAA Central Division triumph over visiting Livonia Stevenson.

"It was our first dual meet of the season so were were able to race our full squad and further evaluate our student-athletes during competition," Northville coach Tim Dalton said. "With that said, we must get better as a team. As a coaching staff we are really looking for some kids to step up, both returning athletes and those that are new to the program."

Goble captured the long jump (17 feet, 2.5 inches) and 100-meter dash (12.2), while Rodriguez added firsts in the 100 hurdles (15.6) and 300 hurdles (51.21).

Other Northville firsts came from Chloe Abbott, 200-meter dash (25.88); Lindsay Walters, 400 (1:02.0); Emma Smith, 800 (2:33.0); Lexa Barrott, 1,600 (5:22.0); and Cayla Eckenroth, 3,200 (11:28.0).

Northville also took three of four relays including the 4 x 200 (1:46.02); 4 x 400 (4:25.0); and 4 x 800 (10:23.0).

"We put some freshmen in varsity events and I'm very happy with how they responded," Dalton said. "We have work to do as a team, but it's early. We talk often about believing in the process. Taking care of our division is the first step in the process. As we head into spring break our message to our kids has been to stay focused."
