Notable efforts achieved by athletes

WATERFORD - Milford’s Mallory Barrett was busy going from one event to another, bouncing from the high jump, to the long jump to a few running events.

But the Mavs needed that kind of commitment, as they squeaked out a narrow victory at among a loaded field of quality teams Saturday at the Ashley Brennan Relays at Waterford Mott High School.

Milford scored 67 points to finish ahead of Saline (65), Northville (60.5), Novi (59.5) and Waterford Mott (44.50).

On the boys side, Waterford Mott had nearly everything fall into place for a triumph with 64 points. Saline was second with 57, Walled Lake Northern was third with 51 and Milford followed with 44.50, slightly ahead of Rochester Adams and Southfield, who each tied for fifth with 41 points.

The Corsairs banked on their strong distance crew with victories in the distance medley, and a runnerup finish in the middle distance relay. Ryan Robinson took down a strong field in the 3,200 run with a 9:10 clocking, and joined Blake Borkowski, Nick Arnold and Kyler Bush on the meet record-setting distance medley relay (10:24.30). “I didn’t know we were on pace to hit the record,” said Robinson, who started his 1,600 leg with a 2:03 first 800. “That was quick, maybe a little fast.”

The Corsairs’ Kyle Miller placed second in a fast 300-meter hurdles race which saw three runners go under 40 seconds. He clocked 39.62, but Southfield junior Delay Wynn took the prize with his 39.35, announced as the fastest time in the state so far.

“I’m surprised,” he said. “It wasn’t the best race … I slipped in the blocks coming out.”

Wynn also ran on Southfield’s winning 1,600 relay. Rochester Adams’ Charlie Rittner had the best effort in the high jump (6-0) and joined Lukas Adgate, Brandon Stacy and Cade Rusniak on the winning shuttle hurdle relay squad.

Walled Lake Northern’s quartet of Chris Cliff, Kevin Vos, Joe Long and Ben Washington won the 800 relay (1:32.77), finishing ahead of runnerup Avondale (1:33.44).

Farmington’s Vonn Pallett had the best effort in the shot put (53-4) and discus throw (147-5), and Walled Lake Northern’s Evan Fortenberry had the best effort in the pole vault (12-feet).

On the girls side, the Mavs needed every point they could muster and Barrett obliged. She was fifth best in the high jump, fourth best in the long jump, and ran on the runnerup 4 x 1600 relay. Dana Shove had the best toss in the discus throw, Whitney Mergens was second-best in the high jump and joined Jillian McGinnis, Breann Marsh and Elexa Cary on the winning shuttle hurdle relay.

Those points were needed because Saline, Northville and Novi were relentless in piling up points. Northville’s Lexa Barrett won the 1,600 (10:54.57), outdueling Clarkston’s Nicole Hanson (10:58.99), Lauren Rodriguez won the 300 hurdles (48.27) - Novi’s Karenna Roest was second in 49.50 - and the Mustangs won the 800 and 1,600 relays, the latter in a blistering 3:54.77. Gracie Goble, Chloe Abbott and Lindsay Walters were big contributors for the Mustangs.

Mott was runnerup in the 1,600 relay with the quartet of Mikayla Gean, Katie Osika, Alexis Munley and Morgan Fuerst.

Clarkston's Megan Nicholson had the best effort in the high jump and teammates Jala Smith, Makayla Owens, Taylor Mullins and Madison Smith formed the quartet which won the 400 relay (50.03).

Ortonville Brandon's Madison Pierce had the best effort in the pole vault (10-0), the long jump (17-8) and anchored the Blackhawks' 400 relay.
