Junior sprinter Chole Abbott figured in four first-place finishes Tuesday as Northville earned a 73-64 KLAA Central Division girls track and field victory over Salem at Centennial Educational Park.

Abbott swept the 100- and 200-meter dashes with times of 12.6 and 27.77, respectively. She also teamed up with Lindsay Walters, Gracie Goble and Erin McCallum for a first in the 800 relay (1:46.07), as well as a victory with Mary Catherine McLaughlin, Walters and Yasmine Affes in the 1,600 relay (4:08.84).

Not to be outone was junior distance runner Lexa Barrott, who captured the 1,600- and 3,200 runs in 5:11.48 and 10:52.07, respectively. Barrott also teamed up with sister Ana, along with Emma Herrmann and Emma Smith for a victory in the 3,200 relay (10:11.63).

"It was a very close meet for us," said Northville coach Tim Dalton, whose team improved to 2-0 overall and 2-0 in the KLAA Central. "We did not run Lauren Rodriguez in the meet due to her being under the weather and it really hurt us. She is a big part our team and what we are trying to accomplish this year."

Other winners for Northville included Lauren Lambert in the high jump (4 feet, 6 inches) and Clara Kim in the pole vault (7-0).

"Spring sports are forced to deal with a week long spring break," Dalton said. "I felt we were a bit flat across the board. We will work some things out in practice this week and get back after it in Rockford on Saturday. I was really impressed with freshman Rachel Zimmer, who finished fifth in the 3,200 (12:06.0). Clara Kim also came up huge for us in pole vault."

Rocks win boys

Jannik Schmidt swept the throws, while Paul Vander took both hurdles events Tuesday as the host Salem boys edged the Mustangs, 71-66, in a KLAA Central Division dual meet at CEP.

Schmidt captured the shot put (45 feet, 11 inches) and the discus (129-4), while Vander took the 110 highs (17.29) and 300 lows (43.87) as the Rocks improved to 2-0 overall and 2-0 in the division.

"It was a very close track meet and especially hard coming off of spring break for many of the athletes," Northville boys coach Brandon Langston said. "I'm proud of the guys who took care of business like it was another day at work. I hope this meet can be a lesson to some kids, too, as it illustrates just how momentum can swing in a track meet just like every other sport."

Distance runner Jason Ferrante paced Northville with wins in the 800 (2:05.16) and 1,600 (4:41.76). He also teamed up with Sean McCullough, Conor Naughton and Jeff Baxter for a first in the 3,200 relay (8:53.33).

Other Northville individual firsts came from Adam Ghabra, 100 (11.47); Jacob Kamm, 400 (51.95); and Naughton, 3,200 (10:12.52).

The Mustangs' 1,600 relay of Sean Flanagan, Kamm, Alec Przybocki and Christian Frieburger was also victorious (3:45.24).

"Every point is important in a track meet," Langston said, "especially those second- and third-place finishes. We got some much needed points in events we weren't expecting to, and then a relay team gets disqualified, which turns into a 10-point swing because we lose five points and they gain it. I just want the kids to understand how important they all are and how they finish a race really has an impact on the meet."
