Abbott drives Mustangs to another regional title

Junior sprinter Chloe Abbott stole the show Friday leading Northville to its second straight Division 1-Regional 7 girls track and field meet title Friday at Highland Milford.

Abbott lowered her school records in the 200- and 400 meter dashes with times of 24.88 and 55.49, respectively, while figuring in a pair of first-place relay finishes as the Mustangs scored 132 points to hold off the host Mavericks, who finished with 107.

Rounding out the top six teams in the 13-school field was Brighton (82), White Lake Lakeland (58), Walled Lake Northern (57) and Novi (54).

Abbott also teamed up with Lindsay Walters, Mary Catherine McLaughlin and Gracie Goble for a win in the 800 relay (1:42.11), while the same foursome also capped off the meet with a victory in the 1,600 relay (3:53.89).

Not to be outdone was junior distance runner Lexa Barrott, who swept the 1,600- and 3,200 runs in 4:58.69 and 10:55.16. She also teamed up with sister Ana Barrott, Emma Herrmann and Cayla Eckenroth for a first in the 3,200 relay (9:32.17).

Senior Lauren Rodriguez also added a first in the 100 hurdles in 14.44.

Other Northville state qualifiers placing second included Rodriguez, 300 hurdles (45.5); Walters, 400 (58.22); Eckenroth, 3,200 (10:57.35).

Also earning the trip as additional qualifiers to the state finals on Saturday, May 30 in Rockford were: Goble, third, long jump (16 feet, 10 inches); Herrmann, fifth, 3,200 (11:17.9); and the third-place 400 relay team of McLaughlin, Megan Krings, Emily Anderson and Rodriguez (50.42).

Novi advanced three individuals to the state finals led by senior Hannah Lonergan, who was runner-up in the 1,600 (5:08.96).

Also making it in under the additional qualifying standards included Karenna Roest, who took fourth in the 300 hurdles (47.19), along with Kate Prisby, who placed fifth in the long jump (16-9).
