Mustangs use speed, balance to knock off Wildcats

NORTHVILLE - The rains came and no one could stop the showers Tuesday as Novi visited Northville for a KLAA Central track and field matchup.

Even so, the show went on, including a postmeet recognition of Northville’s senior athletes, and there were plenty. Each was presented with a rose and a cupcake, and a celebratory stroll with parents on the track as teammates and supporters cheered the occasion.

They even took a final lap, and exited through a human tunnel formed by teammates.

At least one cupcake was dropped on the track, by accident to be sure, but all was good, especially since the Mustangs topped Novi on both the boys (94-39) and girls (89-47) sides.

Novi coach Marsha Reid saw it coming, especially with a young squad stlll getting acquainted with the nuances of track and field.

Plus Northville’s girls are still loaded with quality distance runners and sprinters, enough to cause any team concerns.

“There’s a huge distance tradition with both of these schools and we look forward to these competitions,” Novi coach Marsha Reid said. “(But) we’re just young. We rely on a lot of freshmen and sophomores to do the varsity stuff, but it’s a lot of fun seeing them make progress.”

Northville’s girls placed second at the Division 1 state meet last year and although they lost a few members from graduation, the Mustangs are still formidable, featuring some of the state’s fastest relay teams. But as the soggy day unfolded, they backed off on some of their events.

Lauren Rodriguez won the 100 and 300 hurdles, Chloe Abbott won the 200, Gracie Goble won the 100 and long jump, and all three ran on the winning 4 x 200 relay.

Novi’s Hannah Lonergan won the 800 (2:21), outdueling Novi’s Cayla Eckenroth, but couldn’t master Lexa Barrott in the 1,600, who eased away from Lonergan on the final lap to win in 5:12.

Novi’s Emma Hammelef won the pole vault and discus throw for the Wildcats.

For the boys, Novi couldn’t keep up with the Mustangs, although the Wildcats had their moments. Joost Plaetinck won the 3,200 in 9:39, finishing ahead of fast-closing Conor Naughton of Northville, them proclaimed his affection for distance running. “I like the two mile (3,200), I think it’s the greatest event in track and field,” said Plaetinck, one of the area’s top distance runners.

Northville won all four relays and won its share of open events as Ramsey Ghabra won the 100 and 200 dashes, and Jason Ferrante won the 800 and 1,600, the latter with a furious kick that shook off Novi’s Nate Hall. With 300 meters to do, both tore down the backstretch, nearly stride-for-stride at maximum speed until Ferrante pulled away in the final meters.

Novi’s John Stefan (110 hurdles) and Dorian Haney (discus throw) also notched victories for the Wildcats, who will see the Mustangs again at Friday’s KLAA Kensington Conference meet.
