NORTHVILLE - Conor Naughton had other options for his college choices, but
in the final analysis, the Northville High senior decided to stay in his home
state.
Naughton was one of four Northville athletes, among family and friends, to sign national letters-of-intent to continue their athletic careers, all at Division I schools, in college during ceremonies at the school.
Naughton signed with Central Michigan University for track and cross country; Lindsay Walters signed with Loyola University of Chicago for track and field; Chloe Abbott will join the Purdue University track and field team and Lexa Barrott is headed for Indiana University for cross country and track.
There was a heavy influence in the Naughton household. Both of my parents went to CMU, smiled Naughton, (but) they let me make the decision.
Naughton earned all-state honors in cross country this past season as he placed 15th and helped the Mustangs place second at the Division 1 state cross country championships. His 5K 15:42 time at the state meet was his fastest of the season.
Northville coach Chris Cronin lauded Naughtons sense of teamwork. I think Conor is going to be a great addition he has the highest running IQ of anyone Ive ever coached, he said. "Hell bring that knowledge and sense of team to Central Michigan. His forte is really going to be at the 5,000-meter distance.
Purdue may be well known for its engineering programs, but Abbott is headed in the opposite direction, where shell major in music and performing arts. Im really happy Im headed for a place where I can fulfill my acting and music career, said Abbott, who evolved into one of the states top track and field athletes last season.
Abbott placed third in the 400-meter dash at the Division 1 state meet, and joined Walters on the third-place state 4 x 400 relay, earning all-state honors in both events, as well as the 200 dash. She was regional champ in the 200 and 400, and her best of 54.41 in the 400 was the fastest in the state.
Shes aiming to shave chunks of time off the 200 and 400 dashes next season. I want to run 53 (seconds) in the 40 and I want to break 24 in the 200 and excel in the 100, Abbott said.
Barrott was a key member of the Mustangs state championship cross country team in 2013 and is a two-time all-state cross country runner.
I think shell jump right in, Northville girls coach Nancy Smith said. She has this work ethic and attitude (and) shes shown that leadership the last two years as captain on the team. Indiana is very lucky to have her.
Barrott earned all-state honors in the 1,600 and 3,200 last year in track, placing third at state in both events. She was also a regional champ in the 1,600 and 3,200, and had a best of 4:55.23 in the 1,600, which ranked No. 7 in the state last season. Her best of 10:37.52 in the 3,200 ranked fifth in the state.
Barrott, who plans to enter the Kelly School of Business at Indiana, is ready for the next level of competition. The coaches really work with you to make that transition easier for you, she said of the anticipated intense training sessions.
For Walters, Bowling Green and Northville were in the running, but Loyola was the place for her. I really like the coach there, his training style and I like the location, said Walters, who prefers the big-city atmosphere of Chicago. Their business school is really good, (too).
Walters had bests of 57.75 in the 400 and ran on the regional champion 4 x 200 relay, which had a season best of 1:42.11, which ranked No. 6 in the state.
(But) I definitely have to focus on getting my times down low, she said.
Barrott will next compete with the Northville running club at the Nike nationals in Portland, Ore. Naughton will race at the Foot Locker Midwest Regionals next month in Kenosha, Wisc.
