Lakeland's Stemple siblings capture high jump

YPSILANTI - After competing at the New Balance Indoor Nationals last weekend in New York, Oak Park girls coach Brandon Jiles expected somewhat of a letdown for the Knights at Saturday’s 60th annual Huron Relays.

But the Knights were just as formidable as they took the team title at Eastern Michigan University’s Bowen Fieldhouse.

Anna Jefferson won the 60-meter dash and Tamea McKelvy was second, Brianna Holloway won the 60-meter hurdles and the Knights swept all four relays en-route to the team title.

Meanwhile, Lakeland’s brother-sister act, Cody and Callie Stemple, won the boys and girls high jump titles with notable efforts.

Calli Stemple leaped 5-feet-5 and Cody Stemple won with a leap of 6-feet-7. “I didn’t do very well (here) last year,” said Calli Stemple, who feels good going into the outdoor season. “A lot more confidence and I know what I need to work on.”

Cody Stemple, who also competed in New York last week, was all smiles. “It felt great, especially since I came back from an injury (knee) … just hope I can get higher (outdoors).”

Oak Park’s girls won last year’s Division 1 outdoor state title and the Knights are poised to do it again this year.

“They came back and performed at a high level,” Oak Park girls coach Brandon Jiles said. “I think we had a good meet. We won the relays we thought we’d win. We had a couple people not running today so we weren’t at full strength, but the people who were here did the job.”

Jefferson, the outdoor state 400 champion last season, clocked 7.78 in the 60 and joined McKelvy, Brianna Holloway, who won the 60 hurdles (9.01) and Carlita Taylor on the winning 4 x 200 relay (1:42.74).

Drew Coleman, Taylor, Holloway and Jefferson comprised the winning 4 x 400 relay (3:52.19).

“We just came back from nationals (but) we gave a lot of effort, and tried our best,” said Jefferson.

Oak Park also won the 4 x 800-meter relay with a unit of Jayla Fleming, Dorriann Coleman, Johnyce Powell and Ersula Farrow, which clocked 9:14.60 to runnerup Birmingham Seaholm, which came in at 9:34.49. Last week at the New Balance nationals, Farrow clocked 2:08.38 in the 800 to place second.

Among other notable performances, Seaholm’s Julia Demko placed third in the 1,600 (5:12.12) and Northville’s Cayla Eckenroth was fifth (5:19.40). In the long jump, won by Ann Arbor Pioneer’s Nicole Wilson (17-2 ¾), Walled Lake Western’s Kirin Tate placed third (16-2) and Northville’s Gracie Goble was second (16-7 ½). Lakeland’s Emma Neuman was second in the pole vault (10-6) and Oak Park’s Courtney Taylor placed third in the shot put (36-10).

On the boys side, Oak Park stumbled a bit, but was still one of the leading teams. The Knights were second with 44 points behind winner Westland John Glenn, who scored 47. “Our top guys false started in the hurdles, that’s what really hurt us,” said Knights coach Robert Lynch.

Indeed, Domond Batten, who had the fastest preliminary time in the 60 hurdles (8.67), and teammate Dewan Hawthorne, sixth fastest, were both disqualified, producing no points for the Knights.

Even so, Marvin White was second in the long jump and fourth in the 60-meter dash, Carmeron Cooper won the 1,600 (4:26.13) and Batten and Ricardo Smith finished fourth and fifth in the shot put.

Brother Rice’s Chiebuka Onwuzurike placed third in the 60 dash (6.97), third in the long jump (20-3) and ran on the Warriors’ 4 x 400 relay which placed seventh. “I wasn’t 100 percent,” Onwuzurike said, “but it was a good day.”

Lake Orion’s Andrew Lorant, who dueled with Cooper of Oak Park, was second in the 1,600 in 4:27.75. Teammate Matt Arenz was fifth (4:42.90). Novi Detroit Catholic Central’s Lance Yassay was third in the high jump (6-3). Grand Blanc won the distance medley relay (10:56.97) and Lake Orion finished second (11:02.44).
